Donald Trump to award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Check. The end of a long, exhausting comeback tour? It captured the attention of the country, and he'll be rewarded with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. That's next on the list for Tiger Woods.

The man who won a record-setting $US1.2 million ($NZ1.77 million) payout for betting that Tiger Woods would win the Masters golf tournament was a first-time sports bettor who day-tripped into Las Vegas from Wisconsin.

Tiger Woods can add another honor to his resume in the wake of his 15th major championship win at The Masters on Sunday afternoon.

Woods will become the fourth golfer to receive the honour, after Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Charles Sifford. The Medal "recognizes those individuals who have made 'an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors'".

Trump has awarded seven medals, and athletes appear to be his favorite profession to choose from.

"Well, he's the President of the United States", Woods said.

Since taking office Trump has given the award to several athletes including former professional National Football League players Roger Staubach and Alan Page and late professional baseball player George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr.
