Newcastle took a big step toward Premier League survival by winning 1-0 at Leicester on Friday, with Ayoze Perez scoring the first-half victor for Rafa Benitez's side.

Leicester City completed 649 passes in this match, their highest total in a Premier League game since 2003-04 (when Opta began recording this data); indeed, three of their four highest successful pass tallies in this time in the division have been recorded in their six fixtures under Brendan Rodgers.

Benitez said, "I will say that he is doing well for us because he is scoring goals, but also his contribution for us in the way that he is plays is quite good, quite positive". In the first half we were too slow with the ball, whenever you play against that type of team that defend deep you have to be quicker and cleaner through the defensive lines and I don't think we did that quick enough.

"They have some very good young players, as well as experience with (Jamie) Vardy and (Wes) Morgan".

The impact he has made has been tremendous and you can be sure Benitez is not too anxious about what he has seen - in fact the Spaniard is likely to be overjoyed.

He has Maguire available again after the defender was rested for the 4-1 win over Huddersfield last weekend following the birth of his daughter Lillie.

James Maddison - who has created more chances than any other Premier League player this season - is key to Leicester's creativity and if he has a poor game, the team tends to suffer. "They don't concede many goals and don't lose by many goals", said the 26-year-old.

"It has shown really great ambition from us in luring him here from such a big club like Celtic, but no it's a great ambition for our Club to now have him here and hopefully we can push on".

Rafa Benitez's men stayed compact at the back after getting the opener, while the hosts lacked the creative thrust to force clear chances in the Newcastle 18-yard area.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said: "It's hard to break down a team like that".

"Now they have more confidence and it will be tough for us".
