Two US soldiers killed in Afghanistan operation

Two personnel of the US army lost their lives in combat operations in Afghanistan on Friday, said a statement of the NATO-led Resolute Support mission released here.

No further details have been regarding the exact location where the two service members lost their lives.

The incident brings the number of American combat deaths in Afghanistan up to four this year.

"Two US service members were killed while conducting an operation", Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying.

While US officials have said the talks with the Taliban have made progress, they have yet to finalize any agreements and intense fighting between the government and the insurgency continues. He had no additional information.

In 2001, after the September 11 attacks on NY and Washington, the USA invaded Afghanistan and ousted the ruling Taliban regime in a matter of weeks.

Last year, 13 US service members were killed in Afghanistan.

The deaths occurred as the US grapples with how to extricate itself from its longest war.

The talks have also opened a rift between Washington and Kabul, with some Afghan officials accusing the United States of sidelining the Afghan government.

The Taliban have often targeted the city of Kunduz, the provincial capital of Kunduz province, most recently in a pre-dawn attack in February on an army base on the city's outskirts that killed 26 members of the Afghan security forces.
