A warrant has been issued for the arrest of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, but his extradition proceedings in the Westminster Magistrates Court may not begin until the Home Office considers and takes a decision on his application for asylum in the UK.

The ED and the CBI are investigating Modi, his uncle Mehul Choksi and others for alleged money laundering and corruption to perpetrate the alleged scam in the Brady House branch of the PNB in Mumbai that was unearthed previous year. "His legal team has had months' contact with the extradition squad and expressed his willingness to cooperate".

"Nirav Deepak Modi, 48 (Date of Birth 24.02.71), was arrested on behalf of the Indian Authorities on Tuesday, 19 March, in Holborn", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. The next hearing of the case in Westminster court will be held on March 29. Even after a warrant was issued against Vijay Mallya, another fugitive businessman who fled to London, they had questioned the government over Nirav.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah also criticised the BJP for taking the credit for Modi's arrest.

Meanwhile, as per ED sources, PMLA court in Mumbai has granted permission to the agency to sell 173 paintings and auction 11 cars of the PNB scam accused.

"An extradition request can not be sent at the stage of investigation".

A London court on Monday had issued an arrest warrant against diamond merchant Modi.
