According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Trout is nearing an an agreement on a 12-year/$430 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Just weeks ago, right fielder Bryce Harper landed a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, which stood as the largest free agent contract in North American sports history under Tuesday, when Trout's Angels deal blew it away. The two-time AL MVP award victor and reigning Baseball America Player of the Year is coming off a season in which he posted a 1.088 OPS, the second-highest mark of any player this decade, while also emerging as one of the top defensive center fielders in the game, which had been a previous shortcoming. Betts signed a one-year, $20 million extension with Boston in January during arbitration, but do the Red Sox try to follow the Angels' blueprint and lock up their superstar to a long-term deal either this season or next before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2020? In terms of annual money, Trout blew past what both Harper and Manny Machado got in their megadeals this offseason, as his new contract will pay him almost $36 million as an average annual value.

After joining the Angels as the 25th pick in the 2009 draft, Trout blitzed through their farm system and debuted at 19 years old during the 2011 season. He finished as runner-up for American League MVP in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018. After an impressive year in 2009, Trout caught the eye of Major League Baseball scouts, and was drafted by the Angels with the 25th overall pick in that year's draft. The Angels have made the playoffs just once during Trout's career and were swept out of the ALDS by the Royals in 2014.
