The most powerful Democrat in the country merely suggested that she doesn't think impeachment is the right course of action for the Democrats to take before the 2020 election, and with that the blue wolves turned on her and started sniping at her spiked heels. Pelosi basically told the Washington Post this man is not worthy of the office he holds and you kind of just have to work around him, and he's not worth dividing the country over anymore.

Do you think President Donald Trump has committed impeachable offenses? It's not an honor to bestow.

"We've got 62 new [Democratic] members", he said. But maybe not two [Trump] terms.

"I refuse to allow Republicans who are recalcitrant and who've already decided that they won't impeach the president regardless of what he does", he said.

In December 2018, 60% of voters wanted Trump to be impeached or censured but this month a Quinnipiac poll found that 59% of respondents do not want impeachment proceedings to begin now.

That thinking among Democrats has shifted, slightly, in part because of the possibility that Mueller's report will not be decisive and because his investigation is more narrowly focused.

Like many in the political arena, she also knows that it's not the Mueller investigation that terrifies Trump and his cronies, it's the stuff thats going on in the Southern District of NY.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), one of the Democratic contenders, was quick to say that she wasn't shutting the door on impeachment.

"A bipartisan process would have to be extra clear and compelling", Schiff told reporters.

A freshmen Democrat is also joining the impeachment movement. Trump's blatant breach of the emoluments clause is one; relatedly, his apparent receptivity to foreign influence on multiple fronts is another. Lawmakers are looking into payments made by longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen to silence women alleging affairs with Trump, and into Trump's efforts to build a tower in Moscow.

Meanwhile, members of Pelosi's caucus have been outspoken about their desire to impeach Trump.

She also, unwisely, gives Republicans the ultimate escape hatch on impeachment. But the real nugget is her conclusion that it would take "something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan" to make it a good idea.

It was Pelosi's most direct comment yet on Trump's possible impeachment, a topic she has dealt with cautiously as it carries the potential to sharply split Democrats and the public ahead of next year's White House and congressional elections.

"She is lowering expectations about the prospect of impeachment and reminding people of the gravity of that move and the impact it would have politically in dividing the country, ' Rep. Gerry Connelly of Virginia told CNN".

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi speaks at a weekly news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Feb. 28, 2019. While fighting against his reelection might be the best way to get rid of Trump, it's not necessarily the best path for undoing his assault on important norms of governance.
