We even encourage it. Philpott's resignation kills that scheme dead in its tracks.

But Philpott is a former family physician who lost a child while working in Niger - she knows real life and death issues, and resigning from cabinet is not that. "Given this convention and the current circumstances, it is untenable for me", Philpott declared, "to continue to serve as a cabinet minister".

The leader of Canada's Conservative opposition, Andrew Scheer, has been a frequent critic of Trudeau. "Justin Trudeau simply can not continue to govern this country now that Canadians know what he has done", Scheer told reporters.

Calls for the prime minister to resign are not usually made lightly by any leader of the official opposition.

"It's clear Canadians need a public inquiry now more than ever", Singh said. After refusing to do so, Wilson-Raybould was demoted to be minister of veterans affairs in January and eventually resigned from the cabinet in February. Citing solicitor-client privilege, Wilson-Raybould refuses to speak about dealings she had on the case when she was attorney general.

The pair's departure is a blow to Trudeau's brand.

Whoever would have thought that Liberals led by Justin Trudeau would say such things?

A lawyer, Erskine-Smith said while Wilson-Raybould's testimony was "compelling", there needs to be full airing of facts in a non-partisan setting. According to the newspaper's story, Trudeau secretly pressured Canada's then attorney general, a woman named Jody Wilson-Raybould, trying to convince her to go easy on Lavalin. The Montreal-based company provides some 9,000 jobs locally, and about 50,000 worldwide.

The case involves allegations of corruption in Libya.

That agreement would have allowed the firm to avoid a criminal trial and instead agree to alternative terms or conditions, like penalties or enhanced compliance measures.

September 4 - The prosecution service tells SNC-Lavalin it will not invite the firm to negotiate a remediation agreement.

Only one American remained in the room at that encounter - Marina Gross, an interpreter provided by the State Department. The White House did not immediately respond a request for comment on details of the order.

But now Philpott has inflicted her own heavy damage on Trudeau with a scorching resignation letter that backs up Wilson-Raybould on the SNC-Lavalin affair. Attorneys general have to remain open to new facts and arguments.

He also thanked her for serving in his Cabinet - something he notably did not do when Wilson-Raybould quit.

"The solemn principles at stake are the independence and integrity of our justice system", she said.

"I experienced a consistent and sustained effort by many people within the government to seek to politically interfere in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion", Wilson-Raybould testified before a parliamentary committee at the end of February, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The next round of testimony on the affair is to come Wednesday.

"There can be a cost to acting on one's principles, but there is a bigger cost to abandoning them", she said in a statement. Both testified earlier at the committee but that was before Wilson-Raybould fingered Wernick as the person who allegedly issued veiled threats and suggested Drouin was a witness to some of the pressure tactics.

Female cabinet ministers stuck up for the Liberals and Trudeau on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, three ministers are scheduled to hit the local hustings in Quebec, starting with a morning visit to Riviere-du-Loup by Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett, who will team up with Maliseet of Viger First Nation Grand Chief Jacques Tremblay for what the advisory is billing as an "important announcement".

The Liberals use their feminist agenda as a talking point but undermine powerful women by referring to them with gendered language and old tropes, Raitt said. The Privy Council clerk also challenges Wilson-Raybould's assertion that solicitor-client privilege prevents her from responding to allegations.

In her letter to the prime minister, the MP for Markham-Stouffville says she has been considering the events that have shaken the federal government in recent weeks and, after "serious reflection", has concluded she must quit.
