Trump Warns Venezuela Military They Are Risking Their Lives, Future

The remarks at Florida International University on Monday afternoon, in the heart of this immigrant community, come weeks after National Assembly leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president and just days after the USA imposed new sanctions on five additional Maduro associates.

Mr Guaido has been recognised as the legitimate head of state by most Western countries and many of Venezuela's neighbours.

Ahead of Trump's speech on Monday, Bolton maintained that the United States is "happy to talk to Maduro or anybody in his former regime to discuss their exit terms from Venezuela".

Sanders says Trump would warn the Venezuelan military that the USA "knows where military officials and their families have money hidden throughout the world".

The development follows Venezuelan self-proclaimed president Guaido warning the country's military not to block humanitarian aid from entering Venezuela.

The Trump administration showed Venezuela's state-owned oil giant, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, a path to escape U.S. sanctions on Friday when the U.S. Treasury said it would "consider lifting sanctions" on those who take concrete steps to "restore democratic order" in the country.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said on his Twitter account that the lawmakers had been advised several days ago that they would not be allowed entry into the South American country.

"The United States knows where military officials and their families have money hidden throughout the world", Sanders said in her preview of Trump's speech.

"This will never happen to us", Trump said.

Trump spoke on Monday in Miami about the political crisis in Venezuela and the dangers of socialism. But humanitarian aid shipments into the country have been blocked by Maduro, who doesn't want USA intervention.

"Socialism is dying and liberty, prosperity and democracy are being reborn" throughout the hemisphere, Trump said, expressing hope that soon, "This will become the first free hemisphere in all of human history".

Maduro said, "Who is the commander of the armed forces, Donald Trump from Miami?" and added, "They think they're the owners of the country". Trump wants to boost support among Florida's Hispanic voters as he looks ahead to his re-election campaign in 2020, when Florida is again expected to be an important swing state.

Trump said the "profoundly grateful" to dissidents and exiles who have protested and raised alarms about the actions of the Maduro government.

Trump had been spending the holiday weekend at his private club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
