Amazon Pulls Out of New York City Plans After Backlash

Our submission resulted from a coordinated effort between St. Louis County, the city of St. Louis, St. Charles County and IL.

"Thank you again to Gov. Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio and the many other community leaders and residents who welcomed our plans and supported us along the way".

But the NY proposal attracted stiffer opposition.

This morning Amazon made public their cancelled plans to create a headquarters in Long Island City, Queens, New York.

The Jeff Bezos-led Amazon announced its engagement to NY (and Virginia, but we don't judge) in November, but the decision was met nearly instantly with protests from local politicians and workers' unions, which argued that the company's move to LIC would only increase the neighborhood's gentrification problem and that one of the world's most successful corporations owned by the world's richest man does not need billions of dollars in tax breaks.

Facing mounting criticism about its unsustainability, Amazon announced today it will no longer open a second headquarters in New York City. Ocasio-Cortez said that she had been contacted by residents who thought Cuomo and DeBlasio's priorities were out of line. All at once, it seemed to cement New York City as a technology hub that could truly rival Silicon Valley. It was upfront from the start that it won't offer financial incentives.

Last week, The Washington Post - which is owned by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, first reported that the retailer was having second thoughts about setting up its ny base.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Amazon was throwing away an opportunity by pulling out of the deal.

'Since brands are bad posters now, i expect amazon to post a bad "why i'm leaving new york" thinkpiece within the day, ' one fan wrote.

"The deal could have been improved". "But now, we won't have a chance to do that".

Refugee soccer player from Bahrain freed by Thai court, escapes deportation
Officials in Bahrain have said the country, "reaffirms its right to pursue all necessary legal actions against" Mr al-Araibi. In the Australian capital of Canberra, Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed the decision of the Thai government.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), one of the project's most vocal opponents, celebrated the news on Twitter.

Maybe this new sense of pragmatism is a good thing for the company, but after searching the continent and deliberating for so long, Amazon's apparent inability to anticipate and manage the opposition in NY makes the whole HQ2 process seem half-baked, and the abrupt cancellation makes the company seem wishy-washy.

The freshman Democratic representative celebrated online retailer Amazon's decision Thursday to scrap its plans to build a new headquarters in her New York City district. "He was recently named to an oversight board that has the authority, or at least the influence, to essentially end the deal".

Will New York's pain be another state's gain?

Hogan didn't elaborate on when state officials might meet with Amazon.

Phil Murphy, the governor of neighboring New Jersey, wasted no time in calling for Amazon to reconsider his state for new offices now that NY is out of the running.

Toronto - one of the 20 finalists for HQ2 - doesn't have that going against it.

Amazon is not officially looking for another city to house the rest of its HQ2, at least for the time being.

"We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world", de Blasio said in the statement. There will now be no HQ2 location in the Big Apple.

"Why should we subsidize the creation of 25,000 Amazon jobs when Amazon's entire business model seeks to eliminate millions of retail jobs", he said. The company may choose to build its HQ2 in another city. "Bringing Amazon to New York diversified our economy away from real estate and Wall Street, further cementing our status as an emerging center for tech and was an extraordinary economic win not just for Queens and New York City, but for the entire region, from Long Island to Albany's nanotech center". Amazon has always been a company that disrespects workers and small [businesses].
