Veteran left-hander Mickelson started his final round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday three shots off the lead but ended up sealing victory by as many strokes in a weather-delayed finale on Monday.

Mickelson had wanted to finish in the dark on Sunday and was left frustrated when Casey refused to play on - but a day later he understood the Englishman's stand.

Casey missed an eight foot birdie chance on the penultimate hole while his long eagle attempt at the par-5 18 ran six feet past and after watching Casey make his closing birdie to secure outright second, Mickelson made no mistake from a similar distance to close out a -7 65 to complete a three-shot victory. Casey at least birdied the 18th for a 71 to finish alone in second, the difference of $152,000.

"It has been a special week for me", Mickelson said.

It was the fifth career PGA victory at Pebble Beach for Mickelson, who matched the all-time record set by fellow American Mark O'Meara.

"I thanked Paul this morning for having us finish in the morning because I get sometimes in my own little bubble that I don't see the big picture", he told Golf Channel's Peter Kostis after the tournament. Another feature of Pebble Beach is the scenic 17-Mile Drive that offers drivers and passengers views of the golf course, seascape and spectacular mansions.

Casey said he didn't see why they should continue in the gathering darkness when they wouldn't be able to complete the round.

Third-round leader Paul Casey, who mixed two bogeys with two birdies, was at 15 under with three holes remaining, tied with Scott Stallings who finished with a 66. He won that summer's British Open at Muirfield and last year's Mexico Championship.

Mickelson and Casey were waiting to tee off when clouds moved in quickly moved in, and rain turned into hail that pounded umbrellas, many of them held sideways to account for the wind.

At 18, Mickelson put the ball in the fairway twice, and dropped his approach six feet from the cup to set up his final birdie putt.

"It's nothing like the course we'll see", Mickelson said.

For years, Mickelson, 48, has rebuffed talk of his age, choosing to focus on aspects that encouraged him going forward even through a four-year stretch without a victory.

There is nothing better in golf than eagling the last hole and that fact will not be lost on David Law after the young Scotsman wrapped up his first European Tour title in style on Sunday. Jason Day (68) and Kim Si-woo (68) were two strokes further back on 13-under 274.
