"They'll make it sound like they had more people than we do". "We're going to stand up against that and stop this wall".

"The president is lying to you to get his border wall", the CNN host said on his program, "The Lead with Jake Tapper", that aired before Trump held a rally in El Paso. "How bad it that?"

Jake Tapper didn't mince words on Monday about President Donald Trump false claim that El Paso, Texas, was one of the nation's "most risky cities" before a border barrier was constructed in 2008. But that's not true.

El Paso is a Texas border city adjacent to Mexico's Ciudad Juarez. In fact, the city's violent crime rate increased 5.5 percent from fiscal year 2007 (the year before construction of the fence started) to 2010 (the year after construction was completed in mid-2009). But many in the city have bristled at the prospect of becoming a border wall poster child.

The resolution stated that Trump, in his State of the Union address last week, "falsely stated that El Paso was one of the most risky cities in the United States until the construction of border fencing". El Paso's had an estimated population of 683,577 people in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

At the time, short lines had formed for both events.

Another Texan who has already declared his candidacy for president is also criticizing Trump's rally in El Paso.
