Soon after, Lady Gaga would return to the stage to accept the night's first broadcasted prize for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow". It was also honored at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the Satellite Awards.

Hugh Jackman, an Emmy and Tony victor, won his first Grammy, picking up best compilation soundtrack for visual media for "The Greatest Showman".

"I would love to just ensure the peace and the good energy in the room, so that we can all feel the true blessing: to be able to have the gift of music as our universal language".

Childish Gambino, Tori Kelly and Lauren Daigle won two awards each. Christian singer Lauren Daigle also won Grammys.

Along with Wilson, this year's presenters include current Grammy nominees Kelsea Ballerini, Leon Bridges and Luke Combs; Grammy winners Alessia Cara, Julian Edelman, Eve, John Mayer, Bob Newhart, Smokey Robinson, Swizz Beatz and Meghan Trainor; recording artist Kane Brown; South Korean pop sensation BTS; past Grammy nominee Cedric The Entertainer; and actors Nina Dobrev, Anna Kendrick, Jada Pinkett Smith and Wilmer Valderrama.

Grammy organizers this year expanded the top four categories - album, record, song of the year, and best new artist - to eight nominees from five in a bid to diversify the contest.

"This is going to be a special Grammys".

"Yes, we have so much more work to do, but this is a moment to be celebrated".

Alicia Keys finished off the powerful moment by adding: "What is better than this?"

Monae hosted the Friday brunch alongside Instagram to celebrate her Grammy nominations, including album of the year for her groundbreaking release, "Dirty Computer". Regardless, the performers are Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Dolly Parton, Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monáe, Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Ricky Martin, Arturo Sandoval, Young Thug, Chloe x Halle, Mark Ronson and Dan + Shay.

Carlile is the most nominated woman with six nominations, including bids for song and record of the year with "The Joke".

Starting with Lady Gaga, each woman noted how much music means to them personally. "I see you", Monae said.

There'll be more news to come tonight.

The lead-up to this year's Grammys has not been completely smooth, though. "Come on, we got a show to do", she said with a grin.

A source close to the singer told CNN that the show's "producers were dictating what songs she could sing".

"It was when my creativity & self-expression was stifled by you that i decided not to attend".

Carlile told the AP she stands behind Grande's "decision to stand up for herself and her art".

For the second consecutive year, black hip-hop artists are leading the pack - but observers are still wondering if nominations success can translate into wins. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.
