The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.

According to WAC 246-105-030, measles is one of many diseases for which a child is required to be vaccinated against or show proof of immunity, before attending any school (public or private) or child care center.

The record numbers came despite the fact that more European children than ever before are being vaccinated against the highly-contagious infectious disease.

Washington now has a sufficient supply of MMR vaccine for children and adults; however, as the outbreak continues, vaccine supply may be affected.

The case is the seventh in Texas in recent days.

The total number of infections last year is 15 times higher than the record low just two years ago, and three times higher than the total reported in 2017.

Statewide in Washington, orders for measles vaccine jumped about 30 percent in January compared with the same month past year, climbing from 12,140 doses to 15,780 doses, figures showed.

Measles spreads through direct contact or through the air. The comparatively high percentage of unvaccinated children in parts of northern OR and Washington, combined with the current outbreak, has led local officials to take drastic measures to prevent further outbreaks.

The orders represent only state-supplied vaccines requested through the federal Vaccines for Children program, which provides free immunizations to children who otherwise couldn't afford them. "There are some more isolated, unvaccinated communities, for example the Amish, where we haven't seen a major outbreak". "I wish it didn't take an outbreak, and one child already being hospitalized, to get vaccination rates up", said Melnick.

Measles cases soared a year ago in Europe as gaps in vaccinations at a local level left the virus an open door to kill 72 children and adults, the World Health Organization said. Denton County officials said they do not believe their case and the Houston ones are connected.

Children can be vaccinated once they are 12 months old.

At the same time, the World Health Organization said, record numbers of children are getting the vaccine - offering hope that the rise in infections may not last.

In 34 of the countries, estimated coverage with a second dose of measles vaccine was below 95 per cent. Health officials say the shots are safe and effective, providing about 93 percent protection with one dose and 97 percent with two doses.

As part of the study, the investigators identified hotspots around the United States now at risk of measles outbreaks due to a declining rate of measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage.
