The proposal calls for a 10-year transition from fossil fuels towards 100% renewable energy across the country, as well as sweeping social changes including new infrastructure, a revamped healthcare system, and a federal jobs program.

The freshman lawmaker is teaming up with veteran Sen. The new panel does not include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, who is calling for a Green New Deal to transform the US economy to combat climate change.

Progressive activists are "extremely supportive of the Green New Deal and think of it as the gold standard plan on climate, and expect their presidential candidates to be treating it as such", said Chad Bolt, associate policy director of Indivisible, a grassroots resistance group. The Green New Deal (GND) wants to transition the United States to "100% clean and renewable energy" while guaranteeing jobs with a family-sustaining wage, family and medical leave, vacations, and retirement security and free higher education, healthy food, healthcare, "adequate housing", and economic security "for all who are unable or unwilling to work", among other things.

"This is such a watershed moment", Ocasio-Cortez said, expressing excitement about congressional efforts to tackle climate change. Ocasio-Cortez was not among those named to the panel, which is chaired by Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla.

The New York freshman lawmaker was one of the sponsors at Thursday's unveiling of a Green New Deal resolution on controlling climate change. Ed Markey of MA on the plan, which aims to eliminate the US carbon footprint by 2030.

The announcement of the Green New Deal came as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tapped eight Democrats to serve on a special committee to address climate change.

Later in the morning, Pelosi said she had not seen the proposal.

The reaction on Twitter was unrestrained in its criticism, while other simply poked fun at Ocasio-Cortez's plan.

Even so, the Green New Deal is more ambitious than the Clean Power Plan proposed by former President Barack Obama to impose emissions limits on coal-fired power plants.

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Senator Ed Markey on Thursday laid out the goals of a Green New Deal to transform the USA economy to combat climate change while creating thousands of jobs in renewable energy. Trump and the Republican-controlled Senate are likely to oppose this one, too.

The administration of Republican President Donald Trump continues to pooh-pooh the threat, but the issue is shaping up to matter among Democrats vying to take Trump on in next year's presidential election. There are specific flaws, too, including the neglect of nuclear power as a potentially important bridge between fossil fuels and the ideal of all-renewable energy.

The Green New Deal would be paid for 'the same way we paid for the original New Deal, World War II, the bank bailouts, tax cuts for the rich and decades of war - with public money appropriated by Congress, ' Ocasio-Cortez said.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she is on good terms with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and won't let climate change divide Democrats. The long and short of it: we have a very limited amount of time to slow global warming, for which the USA has "historically been responsible for a disproportionate amount of greenhouse gas emissions".
