Confirmed Measles Cases In Oregon

This is the seventh confirmed case of measles in Texas in the past week.

Updated at 10:25 p.m.: Revised to include a sixth case confirmed by state health officials. "They stayed away from others while on symptom watch, so we have no new public exposures to measles".

The health department said they are taking all precautionary measures to prevent the disease from spreading with five measles cases reported in Harris, Montgomery and Galveston country earlier this week. All individuals are children that were either unvaccinated or had not completed the vaccine series.

Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus that can be spread through coughing and sneezing.

According to newly released data from the year, 82,596 people were infected and 72 people (children and adults) died from measles last year. With the measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest, it was only a matter of time before other states started having confirmed measles cases as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends children get two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine - one between 12 and 15 months and the second between ages 4 and 6 - to be fully protected against measles. Residents born prior to 1957 are considered immune to measles but those born in 1957 or after should verify vaccination history. "If you haven't gotten immunized, get an immunization to protect you and those around you".

Three were reported in Harris County and one was reported in Galveston County by the counties' health departments.

A hallmark of measles is a rash that begins as flat, red spots on the face and spreads down the neck to the rest of the body. The Houston Chronicle reports health officials were told the four children who fell ill had received their first of two measles vaccines.

The Oregon Health Authority reported that the number of measles vaccines in the last week of January tripled in the tri-county area (Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties).
