Trump told reporters at the White House Wednesday that Schiff is "just a political hack who's trying to build a name for himself" and called his committee's probe "presidential harassment".

"The President's actions and posture towards Russian Federation during the campaign, transition, and administration have only heightened fears of foreign financial or other leverage over President Trump and underscore the need to determine whether he or those in his Administration have acted in service of foreign interests since taking office", Schiff said in a statement announcing the expanded investigation.

Two Republican members of the panel, Reps. "He has no basis to do that", Trump told reporters, when asked about Schiff's plans to expand the scope of the House Intelligence Committee's probe.

Cohen, a longtime ally and fixer for Trump, was scheduled to testify at a closed-door hearing before the panel on Friday.

Schiff told reporters following a Wednesday meeting by the House Intelligence Committee, which he now chairs, that in accordance with promises made after the November 2018 election, the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election would be reopened.

The committee voted on the step to release the transcripts Wednesday at its organizational meeting, where it announced it will relaunch the probe and focus on five key areas of interest.

Schiff also said the panel's first act had been to authorize the transmission of all of the transcripts of witness testimony as part of the House Russia investigation to the special counsel. But Schiff said Wednesday morning that the interview had been postponed to February 28 "in the interests of the investigation".

Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, speaks to members of the media outside the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 17.

Stone pleaded not guilty to charges last month that he lied to the House panel about his discussions during the 2016 election about WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group that released thousands of emails stolen from Democrats.

To protect ongoing investigative interests and information that remains classified, the Committee will release transcripts in a manner and according to a timetable that allows continued pursuit of important leads and testimony, while ensuring that the American people have faith in the process and can assess for themselves the evidence that has been uncovered, while legitimate national security interests continue to be protected. They have been undergoing a declassification review.

It is unclear if the special counsel has explicitly requested access to any additional transcripts.

Democrats complained forcefully a year ago that Republicans had blocked their effort and denied their request to subpoena key witnesses.
