Barcelona could be without Lionel Messi for Wednesday's Clásico against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.

It was Messi's 20th league goal of the season and the ninth consecutive match in which he's found the net, across all competitions.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde is hopeful that it's nothing too serious and is optimistic that Messi will be available to face Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinal first leg.

Marcelino's side's strategy of intense pressing and rapid counter-attacks paid off with their two goals while their organisation and discipline prevented Barca from hitting top gear, even through Sergi Roberto nearly equalised before the interval when his shot hit the post.

But Atletico Madrid, now six points behind, can close the gap when they take on Real Betis on Sunday.

Messi also has 10 assists for Barcelona on the season.

"We will have to wait to see what medical staff say". I can't say exactly what problem he has, I don't know, ' said Valverde. Two minutes into the game they attacked along Barca's left, weakened because Sergi Roberto was playing in place of Jordi Alba.

What a strike. Messi's now got 21 La Liga goals to his name as he enjoys another prolific campaign for Barcelona.

Barcelona made Valencia pay for their missed chances in the 64th minute and it was not a surprise that the home side's equaliser came from Messi, who curled one into the bottom corner from distance.
