5 killed as debris from plane crash hit California house

Two people were killed, and two were taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon when a small airplane crashed into a California home.

It's been reported that a small plane came apart in the air, dropping parts throughout a neighbourhood in southern California.

The Cessna aircraft took off from Fullerton Municipal Airport in Orange County, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Footage from the scene shows the carnage, with several homes damaged and one completely aflame.

Initially, a report by the Orange County Fire Authority said that only two people had died.

A spokesman with the National Transportation Safety Board says the twin-engine Cessna 414A crashed shortly after taking off from a nearby airport.

Two houses were involved in flames, fire officials told KTLA.

Two other people were injured in the incident.

Authorities did not reveal the identifies of the two people who died or of the two that were injured.

It is unclear how many people were on board the plane at the time of the crash.

About 70 firefighters responded to the massive blaze, along with deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

One firefighter suffered an ankle injury, Rossman said.

Video posted on Twitter showed panicked residents running to a suburban home that was engulfed in flames.
