Mueller Probe ‘Close to Being Completed,’ DOJ’s Whitaker Says

He said there have been signs for some time that the probe is "winding down", noting that Mueller is allowing defendants to be sentenced, he's staffing down a bit, and he has transferred a number of cases to other components of the Justice Department.

Cohost Brian Kilmeade brought up Monday's comments made by Matt Whitaker during a Dept of Justice press conference in which the acting attorney general relayed that, in his end, the Mueller probe would be coming to an end.

Barr, though comparably more circumspect in his public statements about the Mueller investigations, also said that he, too, would not necessarily heed advice from Justice Department ethics officials concerning the Mueller investigation - a position that provoked ire from Democrats.

Whitaker did not elaborate or give any timetable for the end of a almost two-year investigation that has shadowed Trump's presidency. His nomination is likely to be voted out of the Judiciary Committee next week, setting up a confirmation vote on the Senate floor before Presidents' Day on February 18.

As attorney general, Barr would oversee Mueller's inquiry into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 campaign, including whether anyone close to Trump conspired in the interference and whether the president sought to obstruct justice.

"As I testified, I believe that Robert Mueller should be allowed to finish his investigation".

"I hope to be pleasantly surprised that he is not attempting to interfere in any way with the Mueller investigation or slow or prevent release of his report, but one could draw those inferences", Coons said.

Attorney General nominee Bill Barr meets with Sen.

At Tuesday's hearing, Feinstein said that Barr's indication that he would write a separate report that he would provide to Congress instead of Mueller's report is something "that needs to be fleshed out".

However, at the last minute Democrats objected, citing concerns over his potential handling of the special counsel investigation. He also pledged to ask Barr whether he would let Trump claim executive privilege to muzzle portions of the report.

Democrats have faulted Barr for a memo he sent to the Justice Department past year criticizing Mueller for looking into Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey as possible obstruction.

Chairman Lindsey Graham of SC said during Tuesday's committee hearing that the potential loopholes are "a good question to get answered" and said he would ask Barr.

The special counsel team has taken down a handful of former associates of the president since launching its investigation in May 2017. Barr provided written answers to follow-up questions from his confirmation hearing. Trump has been adamant since taking office there was no cooperation and has repeatedly called the probe a "witch hunt".
