Nationwide status yellow snow-ice warning issued

A widespread fall of snow is expected and people have been advised to take care when heading out in case they become caught out by the severe weather. A spokesman for Met Office said: "Snow, possibly heavy at times, developing overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday".

"Tomorrow, Any falling snow will quickly move away to the east leaving behind clearer conditions but also very cold with a significant wind chill as well as ice in some places".

A covering of 3cm of snow is "likely quite widely", the warning said, as a band of rain from the west turns to snow on Tuesday evening.

Met Eireann say this warning will be updated at 10am tomorrow, Tuesday, January 29. There will be some showers across the west of the country, extending eastwards during the afternoon but a good deal of dry weather overall. The maximum temperature is expected to be 4 °C. Cloudy later, with rain, sleet and snow moving across most areas during the evening. Minimum temperatures of -1 to plus 2 degrees in mostly moderate westerly breezes. Wednesday will continue very cold with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers.
