Part of his confusion is that while Giuliani frequently speaks to his client, the president's legal team has had a hard time corralling Trump for a lengthy debriefing about the facts of the case, particularly from events stemming before the presidency, according to one official and a Republican close to the White House.

The president during the campaign denied working on any deals with Russian Federation but tweeted late a year ago that he "lightly looked at doing a building in Moscow".

Several of Trump's influential outside allies also have begun expressing reservations about Giuliani.

There have been reports that Trump is unhappy with Giuliani's recent interviews, one that included an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" where he said Trump had conversations with his former lawyer Michael Cohen about a potential Trump Tower in Moscow that could have spanned "throughout 2016".

A final letter of intent signed by Trump on October 28, 2015, noted Trump Tower Moscow would have "approximately 250 first class, luxury residential condominiums", 15 floors of 150 hotel rooms, a luxury spa by Ivanka Trump and fitness center, and a commercial area for businesses to rent.

The president has repeatedly denied any collusion.

"The president also remembers - yeah, probably up - could be up to as far as October, November", Giuliani said. They didn't even know where to send it, they knew so little about it.

He got somewhat more straightforward while reflecting on his legacy.

Trump said on Saturday that the BuzzFeed piece was a "disgrace" to the U.S. as well as journalism. It also drew a rare denial from the special counsel's office.

In November, Buzzfeed reported the Trump Organization at one time planned to give Russian President Vladimir Putin a penthouse worth $50 million in the never-built tower.

"Rudy had done a very good job going on TV and fighting back and laying down a defense of the president", said Sam Nunberg, a former Trump campaign official.

However, the lawyer quickly attempted to pour cold water on the developing political fire, saying on Monday that his remarks were "hypothetical" and that they "did not represent the actual timing or circumstances of any such discussions" he had with the president.

Trump insisted repeatedly throughout the presidential campaign that he had no business dealings in Russian Federation.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and chairperson of the House intelligence committee, said the panel planned to investigate why Cohen made false statements to Congress and determine what exactly Cohen and Trump might have discussed about his testimony. Cohen had previously claimed such discussions ended in January 2016 - ahead of the Iowa caucuses and the first votes being cast in the primaries.

Speaking with The New Yorker, the former mayor said he is "absolutely" anxious about his legacy amounting to lying for the president. Individual 1 was believed to be Trump, based on the description in court documents.

Discussions about a planned construction project were ultimately abandoned and no contract was signed.
