The Frenchman had a strained relationship with Mourinho and was at odds with him for the majority of his time there.

United have already invoked an option to extend Martial's existing contract by 12 months to the end of next season but they want the 23-year-old to commit his long-term future.

"It is very easy to play well and not win", Mourinho said. "We have more of a pattern of play and more of a structure", he told Sky Sports News.

Mourinho also went on to say the reason he was working as a pundit was to "understand new football better" in possibly his most humble statement over the past 20 years. Mourinho made his point by talking about the set-up that managers need to have in place in order to be successful.

"So if I was Solskjaer and I'm sure he does have ambitions to take the job full-time, then I would be careful, certainly at least what I admit publicly about the man he calls "the gaffer" giving him advice".

He said: "I used to be one of four strikers when we played with two".

"It's always good to hear good things about me but I couldn't perform without the team so it's not only me it is the team", he added.
