While much has been made of the Trump-funded fast food smorgasbord the White House offered up to the college football champion Clemson Tigers on Monday, POTUS's crack about first lady Melania Trump and second lady Karen Pence making salads has some critics calling him sexist.

"How do you negotiate with the speaker of the House when she tells you even if you open up the government, we are not going to give you but $1 for the wall?" Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza.

"Maybe the president sensed he was in over his head here because he quickly changed the subject to things he is an expert in: Watching football and eating fast food", said Colbert.

The comments drew a laugh from the attendees as Trump listed the establishments - "all American companies" - whence the food came, including Burger King, Wendy's and McDonald's. "However, I continue to believe the Senate should pass and the President should sign the bills reopening government that the House already passed", Murphy said in a statement, adding that she'd prefer the government re-open.

Atlanta-based rapper Quavo took to social media Tuesday and extended an open invitation to the Clemson Tigers football team to celebrate its recent College Football Playoff title win.

"President Trump got all our favorite foods, it was the best meal we ever had".

"I do think if we reopen the government, if the president ends this shutdown crisis, we have folks who can negotiate a responsible, modern investment in technology that will actually make us safer", Democratic Senator Chris Coons of DE said on Fox.

The White House didn't issue an official list of Democrats who were invited. I think he's where the American people are.

But they are furloughed, staying home without paychecks as Trump fights with Congress over funding the federal government. "So we went out and we ordered American fast food, paid for by me", Trump said.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said the partial shutdown will cost the airline $US25 million in lost revenue in January because fewer government contractors are travelling. "And it's going to be very interesting to see at the end of this evening how many are left", Trump told reporters.

Democrats took control of the House after last year's congressional elections.

Despite there having been a significant decrease in the number of migrants apprehended at the U.S. -Mexico border in the past 18 years, Pence defended his use of the term "humanitarian crisis" by pointing out that last month the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency "apprehended almost 40 percent more unaccompanied children and groups claiming to be families than in May 2014, which President Barack Obama described as a "humanitarian crisis" at the time".

The White House is operating with a thinned-out staff caused by the partial government shutdown, now in its 24th day, and snowy Washington weather.
