Tim Scott of SC, the GOP's sole African American senator, called on his party to explicitly denounce King and his rhetoric.

King said in an interview last week, "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization-how did that language become offensive?"

"I regret the heartburn that has poured forth upon this Congress and this country and especially in my state and in my congressional district", King said on the floor. Steve King last week, pledged Sunday to take action against the Republican House member. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said following McConnell's statement.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told reporters Monday that the GOP had voted unanimously to remove Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, from all committees amid the rising uproar over his recent comments about white nationalism. "Instead, they must actually condemn Mr. King by removing him from his committee assignments so that he can no longer affect policies that impact the very people he has made it clear he disdains". "He ought to resign and move on and let someone else who represents American values take his seat".

However, King still campaigned with top Iowa Republicans on the eve of the election and had not faced the full condemnation of his party until his most recent comments.

Facing backlash, King sought to clarify his statements Thursday, calling himself simply a "nationalist" and attempting to separate himself from people who "support this evil and bigoted ideology". I haven't given it any thought. King now sits on the House Judiciary Committee as well as the Committee on Agriculture and the Small Business Committee.

"We have made significant progress in our nation, and while there is still work to do, we can not let these intolerant and hateful views hold us back".

'As with any animal that is rabid, Steve King should be set aside and isolated, ' Rush said Monday. "We must work to lead our nation forward".

President Trump side-stepped a question about King in remarks to reporters ahead of a trip to New Orleans on Monday.

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, also introduced a similar, albeit narrower, resolution.

In a later statement after he was removed from his committee assignments, King explained that his comments had been mischaracterized to apply to white nationalism and white supremacy, when he had only meant his statement of approval to apply to Western Civilization. He has warned against the dissolution of white Christian culture in America with "someone else's babies" and, mere weeks before his his election a year ago, visited with neo-Nazi figures in central Europe lamenting Germany's loss of national pride since the end of World War II.

King has already drawn a primary challenger for the 2020 election: Randy Feenstra, a GOP state senator.
