Snowstorm blankets mid-Atlantic US, at least seven dead in Midwest

The Chicago area could start to see snowfall starting late Friday and going much of the day Saturday as most of IL was under winter storm warnings and advisories, with up to 9 inches of snow forecast for southwest parts of the state.

The Mid-Atlantic has seen about half a foot of snow and can expect another 7 to 8 inches, in addition to freezing rain and sleet, according to David Roth, a forecaster with the Weather Prediction Center.

"We have a strong snowstorm that's stretching 1,400 miles from Kansas to the East Coast", CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said.

Parts of the Mid-Atlantic are bracing for the first major snow storm of the new year.

Across the country's midsection, 50 million people are under a winter storm advisory, watch or warning.

The Weather Network reported at least three deaths via Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP).

Virginia State Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle was killed late Saturday after he lost control on Interstate 81 due to slick road conditions.

It reached Kansas and Missouri on Friday and spread to Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and OH on Saturday.

More than 240,000 people were without power Sunday across North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas and Virginia.

Jefferson City Police Department Sgt. Gary Campbell said between 11 p.m. Friday and around 2 p.m. Saturday, the department responded to 46 accidents. Auto accidents resulting from icy, snow-covered roads were already being reported on Saturday evening.

Ronald W Harris, 73, of Gainesville, Georgia, died after his vehicle was struck by two tractor-trailers.

More than 450 flights across the US had been canceled on Sunday morning, according to Flight Aware.

The central United States is being bombarded by snow as a winter storm hits the area.

Those lanes remained closed at 4:30 the highway's intersection with State Road 25, but Hampton said they were expected to reopen to traffic by early evening once the crash site is cleaned up.
