Xi & Kim agree to ‘jointly’ advance & steer the denuclearization of Korean peninsula

Prior to departing Beijing, North Korean state media reported that Kim once again extended an invitation to Xi to visit Pyongyang, which Xi reportedly accepted.

Abe's latest comments come after Kim traveled to China for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on US sanctions, after which both leaders issued statements supporting a second U.S.

Meanwhile, Cheong Wa Dae said it hopes Kim's visit to China "lays the groundwork" for a second U.S.

Kim said during his China visit this week that there is no change in North Korea's stance to faithfully carry out the agreement reached with US President Donald Trump during their Singapore summit, and pursue a peaceful resolution through discussion, KCNA said.

Kim reportedly said North Korea "will continue sticking to the stance of denuclearization and resolving the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation, and make efforts for the second summit between (North Korean) and US leaders to achieve results that will be welcomed by the global community".

Panmunjom, the truce village in the Demilitarised Zone that divides the Korean peninsula, is the site South Korean government hoped the meeting would take place.

He also credited Chinese President Xi Jinping with helping reduce regional tensions, saying 'the Korean Peninsula situation has been easing since previous year, and China's important role in this process is obvious to all'.

Naoko Aoki, a nuclear security fellow at the RAND Corp.in Washington, said that Kim's delegation included officials focused on diplomatic and security policy and some key economic players haven't been seen.

Mr Xi said China supported North Korea and the U.S. "holding summits and achieving results, and supports relevant parties resolving their respective legitimate concerns through dialogue".

Trump earlier said that the USA and North Korea are in talks over where to hold their second summit and a decision on the venue will be announced in the "not-too-distant future".

It wasn't clear from the reports if Kim was in back in North Korea, but his train presumably would arrive sometime Thursday.

Mr Moon said Kim's Beijing visit was a "sign" that a second face-to-face meeting with Mr Trump may be imminent.

Kim's visit overlapped with a U.S. delegation led by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, which held talks in Beijing since Monday amid a 90-day truce in the U.S. The sanctions have severely impacted his country's already ailing economy.

Despite sanctions, China remains North Korea's main trading partner and benefactor, accounting for 90 percent of the reclusive nation's imports.

North Korea needs to take "more bold, practical measures for denuclearization" to ensure sanctions are lifted, the South's President Moon Jae-in said Thursday, January 10, with negotiations stalling between Pyongyang and Washington. "The relations between China and the United States have changed from how it was when Kim and Xi met past year".

Kim and Xi agreed to jointly study and co-ordinate "the management of the situation of the Korean peninsula and the denuclearisation negotiations in particular", the North's official KCNA news agency reported. Tuesday also coincided with the North Korean leader's 35th birthday.
