In what is tipped to be the final edition of the unique tournament, the best was saved for last as Federer became the first player to win three Hopman Cups, teaming with Belinda Bencic to make it successive titles in Perth.

It was a flawless 6-4 6-2 win over ATP Finals champion Zverev.

Going down to the final point in the Fast4 format, Switzerland survived a match point in the third set tie-break and managed to snatch the historic win 4-0 1-4 4-3 (4).

Bencic, 21 years old with two titles, has plenty of time to overtake Federer for the record, that is if the event survives into future years.

Victory in Perth serves as a ideal season opener for Federer, 37, who will be looking to add to his record haul of 20 Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in Melbourne later in January. "Playing here as a team with your partner, playing the mixed which is exciting, I will miss it".

With both Germany and Australia undefeated in the competition so far, the final match of Group A would determine who would meet the Swiss in the final of the mixed tennis tournament at the RAC Arena in Perth.

That means that Stefanos and Maria had to overcome the great Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic that are also the defending champions in Perth.

"And for us as well, and we wanted to.to win".

Zverev had a glimmer of hope in the first game of the second set, 0-30, and two deuces, but the Federer serving was just too good.

However, this may well be the last Hopman Cup, which is scheduled to be displaced by the new ATP Cup which will overlap with the event from next year.

However, Zverev and Kerber returned fire, taking the second set from the Swiss combo 4-1.

"It was a good match for me, no doubt about it", he said.

"I will be excited to watch it tomorrow and see who we play in the final", Federer said.
