White Sox make official offer to free agent Manny Machado

The Washington Post also reported that a meeting between Harper and Nationals owner Ted Lerner took place on the Sunday before Christmas, but initially people within the team refused to confirm it before later admitting that there had been more than one meeting during the winter. Just yesterday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com wrote that the White Sox and Phillies appeared to be the two teams willing to offer ten or more years to both Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. On the last day of the regular season, the team reportedly made a 10-year $300 million offer and seemed unwilling to budge from that valuation.

It can be assumed that Harper also has emotional ties to the Washington organization.

That could then leave the door open for the Nationals to make a similar offer to the one they reportedly made in September. And quite honestly, the focus on the number of the years for either player, but particularly Harper, has been overblown to this point.

North Korea's Kim sent message to Trump on atomic talks: Chosun Ilbo
In an attempt to start working-level negotiations, the US said it would review its policy on humanitarian aid to North Korea. Despite these setbacks, another summit between Mr Trump and Mr Kim could happen in 2019.

Regardless, numbers and ideas are going to be thrown around, but not yet will the stupid money come into play in Sin City, and Harper won't get mobbed by Philadelphia's electricians. I understand there are some warts with any free agent, and that's true with Harper and Machado, but it would be nuts to me if they wind up signing a seven-year deal, even at $30 million AAV. Bruce Levine of 670 The Score quickly responded by saying the Sox were unlikely to offer more than seven years to either player. There is a big difference between $160 million and $400 million dollars.

Multiple reports say the Phillies are going to visit Harper and his agent Scott Boras in Las Vegas sometime next week. Despite all the madness, Harper has not signed and doesn't seem to be close to inking a contract any time soon. Many are speculating that the Yankees have a great shot at locking up the 26-year-old superstar, but nothing is set in stone yet.

The White Sox might find themselves "relatively close" to the Dodgers in the competition for Harper, that is if they don't want to go past seven years and if the Dodgers have no interest in a huge, decade-long pact. TC Zencka at MLB Trade Rumors may have captured the essence with the final six words of his piece on Harper today: "the best we have is conjecture".
