Russian Federation on Wednesday conducted a final test of a nuclear-capable glider that flies at 20 times the speed of sound, President Vladimir Putin said, adding that the weapon will be added to the country's arsenal next year.

The Avangard missiles are created to fly faster and at higher altitude to avoid missile defense systems.

According to the Kremlin, the president further emphasized that "this is a great success and a great victory".

"The Avangard is invulnerable to interception by any existing and prospective missile-defense means of the potential adversary", Putin said.

Despite having a mass in its start between 50 and 60 tons, the Avangard (RS-26) travels at a hypersonic speed with a maximum range of six thousand kilometers.

So Putin announced two years later that Russian Federation was working on a new hypersonic weapon.

Launched from the Dombarovsky missile base in the Ural Mountains, the weapon struck a practice target 3,700 miles away on the Kamchatka peninsula.

The U.S. says Russian Federation was in violation of the INF agreement, because it developed and deployed a new cruise missile, an allegation Russian Federation has denied.

On Wednesday, Putin said that the system will be put into service next year, for which a special regiment will be formed within the Russian Strategic Missile Forces.

Russian Federation upgraded its military arsenal further with the successful launch of a hypersonic missile capable of traveling at up to 20 times the speed of sound and gliding across the upper atmosphere.

The missile that carries the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle is the UR-100NUUTKh, an ICBM-class missile. It's a big moment in the life of the armed forces and in the life of the country. China's DF-17 hypersonic glide vehicle is estimated by USA intelligence agencies to see deployment by 2020.

Russian Federation has pointed to USA missile defenses to justify the development of hypersonic boost-glide missiles that can carry nuclear weapons.

"Flying at hypersonic speed, the glide vehicle performed vertical and horizontal manoeuvres and hit the hypothetical target in time within the range's combat field", the statement added.
