At least 3 dead in Egypt tourist bus bombing near pyramids

Two Vietnamese tourists were killed earlier on Friday and ten others were injured in a tourist bus explosion in Marioteya district, near Giza governorate. The pyramids are in that region.

The country's Interior Ministry said an explosion from an improvised device hidden near a wall on a street in the outskirts of Cairo hit the tour bus. At least 10 Vietnamese tourists and the Egyptian bus driver were wounded, authorities said.

CNN's Hossam Ahmed reported from Cairo and Mohammed Tawfeeq reported and wrote from Atlanta.

The white tourist bus could be seen with its windows shattered and surrounded by soot-covered debris, AFP reported.

Egyptian security forces have killed 40 suspected militants in three separate incidents in North Sinai and Giza. "It was awful, people screaming", she told Reuters, speaking at al-Haram hospital, where the injured were taken.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast. "I don't remember anything after".

While the three tourists were pronounced dead at the scene, the guide died on the operating table at El Haram hospital, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli told reporters.

It said that 10 were seriously injured.

The last deadly attack on foreign tourists in Egypt was in July 2017, when two Germans were stabbed to death in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

Security forces have since February been conducting a major operation focused on the Sinai Peninsula, aimed at wiping out a local ISIS branch.

Egypt's government says it is prioritising fighting Islamist militants, as it works to restore stability after years of turmoil following the Arab Spring protests of 2011.
