Shortly after, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that its own air defenses had fired at a Syrian anti-aircraft missile.

The air raid was the first since Donald Trump announced he was pulling USA troops out of Syria, prompting Israel's government to say it would continue and expand its fight against Iran and its proxies in the country. No injuries or damage was reported.

Pro-Iranian military outposts, air defence facilities and military headquarters were also damaged in the strikes, according to the Jerusalem Post.

But whether Tuesday night a Hezbollah delegation was indeed in Damascus at about the time of the air attack, is not confirmed.

Also reportedly targeted were strategic Iranian supplies to Hezbollah, including advanced Global Positioning System components for use in the many, many missiles that the Lebanese terror group has aimed at Israel.

Jets pounded targets with 22 missile sorties on positions used by Iran and Hezbollah, Syrian state media reports.

The source claimed that the airstrike was conducted minutes after the Hezbollah leaders boarded a plane bound for Iran.

The attacks came less than a month since Syrian air defenses were activated against several missiles, which were aimed at the city of al-Kiswah, located approximately 13 kilometers south of Damascus.

"The aggression originated from above the Lebanese territories and a number of hostile targets were downed", Syrian TV added.

Minister Gebran Bassil also issued instructions to Lebanon's envoy to the United Nations to lodge a complaint against Israel at the Security Council, the statement said.

"Our air defences confronted hostile missiles launched by Israeli war planes from above the Lebanese territories and downed majority before reaching their targets", the source said. Israel was said to have targeted Iranian shipments of advanced Global Positioning System components meant to help Hezbollah convert its rocket arsenal into precision-guided missiles.

Israel and Hezbollah, who are technically still at war, have avoided any major conflict at the border since 2006, though Israel has mounted attacks in Syria targeting what it said were advanced weapon deliveries to the group.
