"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" Smashes Nintendo Switch Sales Record

Ultimate also set a new record by becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo home console game of all time in Europe.

Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation through 21 months, according to The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

It's also the fast-selling game in the 19-year-old Smash series, according to USA sales data that Nintendo released Tuesday.

Nintendo says that "five of Nintendo's ten best-ever Australian and New Zealand home console software launches are now on Nintendo Switch".

For Nintendo, the Switch's success has also extended to its games as well.

"We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch".

According to NPD the Switch has sold more than 8.7 million consoles in the USA since last March, which compares to roughly 29 million for the PlayStation 4 and 25 million for the Xbox One. The more recent Super Mario Party stands at 1.4 million and Pokémon: Let's Go a total of 2 million.

Nintendo eShop sales have grown 105 percent over 2017. With over three million units sold in just 11 days, Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now at retailers and in Nintendo eShop, and in a limited hardware bundle complete with branded Joy-Con controllers and dock and a download code for the game. The stock closed at $34.72 on Monday, continuing a sporadic descent.

Since the Switch launched three years later than its two rivals it'll never catch up, and so direct comparisons between overall sales are essentially meaningless.
