Alphabet Inc's Google is investing over $1 billion to establish a new campus in NY, becoming the second major technology company after Amazon to pick America's financial capital to expand and create thousands of jobs.

Google says it will lease office space at three spots in the West Village to create a new campus for thousands of workers in New York City.

Google's plan to expand is being announced a month after Amazon said it would put one of its second headquarter locations in New York's Long Island City neighborhood, creating upward of 25,000 jobs in the region. Just days after Apple's announcement for a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, Google reveals its intentions for a new $1 billion campus in New York City, which will expectantly bring more than 7,000 new jobs, The Washington Post reports.

Google says the buildings at 315 and 345 Hudson Street will be ready for employees starting in 2020, and the 550 Washington Street location will be ready in 2022. In total, this will offer Google an additional 1.7 million square feet of space to house employees. Amazon's move to both New York City and Virginia, in particular, is causing some controversy due to the heavy tax breaks the company is receiving.

Google hopes to start moving into two Hudson Street buildings by 2020, followed by a Washington Street in 2022 and will have the capacity to more than double its NY head count, now more than 7,000, in the next 10 years.

Google is keen to point out that it isn't just jobs it brings to NY, but lots of investment, too.

The move is the latest high-profile expansion from a US tech giant, following big investments from Apple and Amazon to create new office spaces in New York, Washington, D.C., and Texas.

It is a "fairly sensible" move for Google given the amount of available talent pool, Atlantic Equities analyst James Cordwell said.
