Apple to open small campus in San Diego with 1,000 jobs

It'll also build new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City.

No formal announcement has been made about the new Vancouver location, but the tower is anticipated to reach completion in 2020.

Texas Governor Greg Abbot and Austin Mayor Steve Adler celebrated the news in a statement. Apple already has a major presence in Austin, with about 6,200 employees in existing offices.

CNBC has learned that Apple is also thinking of investing $10 billion in USA data centers in the next five years. E-commerce giant Amazon Inc. recently revealed plans to build a major new campus in NY, while Google has opened new offices in sites including Boulder, Colorado.

The investment will follow announcements from other major tech companies, which have been laying out their US expansion plans.

"We won't have anything more beyond what's in the [press] release today", an Apple spokesman said.

Apple and other American technology companies have faced calls from President Trump to boost employment in their home country.

The median Austin home sold for $327,000 in the first quarter of 2018, a price well above the national median.

While smartphone providers like Samsung and Motorola have already announced plans for 5G phones, Apple lags behind. Here, the company maps its U.S. offices by size. Some components, like the smartphone's glass cover, are manufactured in the USA and shipped for assembly in China.

The News & Observer reported in mid-May that Apple's CEO Tim Cook had met with Gov. Roy Cooper that month, to discuss the possibility of a campus on the Wake County side of Research Triangle Park.
