Central Intelligence Agency Director Gina Haspel briefed leaders of the House of Representatives behind closed doors about the killing.

Lawmakers leaving the House briefing with Haspel, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, declined to comment, saying it was classified.

Turkey is in talks with the United Nations regarding the investigation into the killing of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday.

The Senate voted 60-39 on Wednesday to advance debate on a war powers resolution that would force the Trump administration to withdraw USA military support for the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen, where an estimated tens of thousands of people have been killed in what has been described by the United Nations as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Mike Lee and Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) have pushed for the United States to end an illegal US war in which Congress did not provide authorization, as per the Constitution.

"I think that exposed to the world what this regime is about", Sanders said of the Khashoggi killing.

"There are more careful ways the Senate could express its concern about the conflict in Yemen or our partnership with Saudi Arabia", McConnell said on the Senate floor on Wednesday. "And Saudi Arabia crossed a line, I would argue, long ago", Murphy said, citing evidence the Saudis are using American-made bombs to deliberately target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Yemen. We must finally end United States involvement in this humanitarian and strategic disaster.

"I hope it's something that will be massively supported in the Senate", Corker said regarding the resolution targeting the crown prince's alleged role.

Trump to nominate Heather Nauert as UN ambassador
On October 9, Trump announced Haley had submitted her resignation and planned to leave the administration at the end of the year. It was reported in November that Nauert had been offered the job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted.

The House action means the only rebuke of Saudi Arabia with a realistic chance of passing the House and Senate this year is a separate non-binding resolution condemning Prince Mohammed as being responsible for Khashoggi's death. Corker has not released the full text of that resolution.

It's unclear whether the GOP-led House, in its final days in power, will approve a similar measure that would amount to an affront to the President.

Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell - a Trump loyalist - had called on his party to vote against the resolution.

Trump has been accused of helping the Saudis "cover up" Khashoggi's killing. Pressed on a response to Saudi Arabia, the president has said the United States "intends to remain a steadfast partner" of the country, touted Saudi arms deals worth billions of dollars to the US and thanked the country for plunging oil prices.

The Saudi government is now grappling with an global crisis over the murder of prominent dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, who had lived in the USA and wrote for The Washington Post, had been critical of the Saudi regime. He was killed in what US officials have described as an elaborate plot as he visited a consulate in Istanbul for marriage paperwork.

USA and Turkish intelligence services, however, have reportedly concluded that the assassination order likely came directly from Prince Mohammed. "Maybe he did, and maybe he didn't!" He said the facts surrounding Khashoggi's killing, which occurred in the Saudi consulate on October 2, are still "developing".
