The sentence was the culmination of a spectacular rise and fast fall of a lawyer who attached himself to the fortunes of his biggest client, helped him get elected president, then turned on him, cooperating with two interconnected investigations: one run by federal prosecutors in NY, the other by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into Russian efforts to influence the race for the White House.

"At the appropriate time, after Mr Mueller completes his investigation and issues his final report, I look forward to assisting Michael to state publicly all he knows about Mr Trump and that includes any appropriate congressional committee interested in the search for truth and the difference between facts and lies", Davis said in a statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday for crimes including orchestrating hush payments to women in violation of campaign laws before the 2016 election and financial wrongdoing, posing potential legal and political risks to Trump. Cohen cooperated knowing "the president might shut down" Mueller's investigation, Petrillo said.

Davis said that false testimony was shared with the White House before Cohen submitted it to Congress and it is possible Trump was aware at the time that Cohen would make false statements.

In a string of Twitter comments, Trump said Cohen, who worked for him for 12 years, was "supposed to know the law".

Cohen was sentenced Wednesday in NY federal court to three years behind bars for crimes including illegal hush money payments to a porn actress and a Playboy model who allegedly had slept with the married Trump.

Cohen told prosecutors the payments were directed by Trump, implicating the president in a possible campaign finance law violation.

Cohen, Flynn and ex-Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort are among a number of the president's aides being investigated by Mr Mueller's team.

In the Manhattan courtroom, Cohen told U.S. District Judge William Pauley that "blind loyalty" led him to cover up for Trump's "dirty deeds".

He gave Cohen two months for lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Tower project in Russian Federation.

Last month, Cohen acknowledged that he had lied to Congress about his contacts with Russian Federation during the election campaign about building a Trump Tower in Moscow and the extent of Trump's own involvement in the negotiations.

"Mr. Trump's repeated lies can not contradict stubborn facts", Davis said.

US President Donald Trump's former lawyer has been sentenced to three years in prison. He lied for months about his conduct.

Trump had originally denied any knowledge of the payments, but later changed his tune, arguing that the payments weren't campaign contributions and therefore weren't illegal.

Trump had repeatedly called for a tough sentence for Cohen, whom he labeled a liar. The project was never built.
