"The evidence we have located so far - our scene examination, CCTV footage and our investigation has determined that Grace is no longer alive and this is a murder investigation", Auckland Police Detective Scott Beard said at a news conference Saturday.

A body, believed to be that of murdered British backpacker Grace Millane, was found Sunday on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand police said.

The last confirmed sighting of Ms Millane was at 9.41pm on December 1, the day before her birthday, at the Citylife Hotel in central Auckland, when she was seen with a "male companion".

Detectives said the body was "believed to be Grace" but it has not yet been formally identified.

Police have said the examination is a "methodical and slow process and is expected to take all day".

He said he could not confirm whether Miss Millane's body was at the site.

Ms Millane, from Wickford in Essex, graduated from the University of Lincoln in September and was on a year-long around-the-world trip.

Support has been given to Ms Millane's father, David Millane, who travelled to New Zealand following his daughter's disappearance and remains in the country with his brother, who is also from England.
