The ratings for last January's broadcast, hosted by Seth Meyers and graced with an impassioned speech by Oprah Winfrey, dipped 5 per cent with approximately 19 million viewers.

Curiously, the Hollywood Foreign Press doesn't consider foreign-language films eligible for best film, so Alfonso Cuaron's Netflix drama "Roma" will be left out of the Globes' top category.

Beyond its best comedy film nod, "Vice" - a searing look at George W. Bush's powerful vice president - picked up a trio of acting nominations for a almost unrecognisable Bale, co-star Amy Adams as Cheney's wife Lynne and Sam Rockwell as Bush.

Samberg is a former Saturday Night Live, cast member and a previous Golden Globe victor for television comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The other movies nominated for a Golden Globe in the best musical or comedy category are Crazy Rich Asians, Green Book, The Favourite and Disney's Mary Poppins Returns. Last year, freshmen series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Handmaid's Tale and Big Little Lies took home the honors of Best Comedy Series, Best Drama Series and Best Miniseries, respectively. Oh is the first person of color to emcee the show.

Even though she's been there and done that with the Globes, she's still positioned to make history if she wins again.

"Assembling" a hosting team is a riskier proposition as evident by the much-maligned team-up of Anne Hathaway and James Franco at the Oscars though Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce received good marks for their Emmy emceeing stint. The news comes just a little over a month before the actual award show. The Golden Globes led NBC to the nightlong win in total viewers despite National Football League playoff competition.

The three-hour 76th Golden Gloves ceremony will air live coast to coast on NBC from the Beverly Hills Hotel at 8 PM.

Ryan Gosling: Gosling has previously been nominated for five Golden Globes.

For even the often-quirky selections of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a collection of 88 mostly less-known freelance film journalists, the strong support for Vice (which arrives in theatres on December 25) was a surprise. The pair presented an award together at the Emmy Awards in September. The trendy "Twilight Zone"-inspired drama "Homecoming" scored 3 nominations, for best drama series and for lead actors Julia Roberts (who missed a drama film actress nod for "Ben Is Back") and up-and-comer Stephan James as therapist and patient in a spooky Florida rehab facility". NBC picked it up a few days later.
