"Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt", the Chiefs said in the statement dispersed to the media, according to ESPN.

Hunt sat down with ESPN's Lisa Salters for a one-on-one interview Sunday, expressing remorse for the incident while also asking for forgiveness and another opportunity in the NFL.

Hunt says he didn't see the video until TMZ released it Friday. The Ravens cut Rice in 2014 after TMZ released footage of him assaulting this then-fiancee and now wife in an elevator of an Atlantic City, N.J., casino.

According to NFL.com, the league is investigating an allegation that Hunt punched a man in the face while visiting an OH resort in June. That incident led to a lengthy legal saga, and it culminated in an investigation by Robert Mueller into the NFL's mishandling of it.

"The NFL's ongoing investigation will include further attempts to speak to the complainants involved in the incident", the statement said. "I'm ashamed of myself".

"Some things were said that I did not like", he said but added: "That's not an excuse".

"Honestly, I just wanted to the let the world know how sorry I am for my actions", Hunt said in an interview with ESPN.

The Chiefs are very much washing their hands of a player who was indisputably one of their stars, plugging back-up running back Spencer Ware into the line-up for Sunday's fixture with the Oakland Raiders and no doubt hoping that their former player's actions don't distract from their pursuit of a first Super Bowl since 1970.

Several more men and another woman emerged from the hotel room and attempted to hold back Hunt, who re-emerged from the doorway to knock one of the men into the woman, both of whom tumbled to the carpeted hallway floor. He also noted the National Football League, as reported earlier, did not interview him about the incident. That's just how I look at it.

Rice said he would like to help Hunt, "because he has a long life to live, this will be a defining moment, but it shouldn't be the moment that defines you".

However, a 19-year-old woman named Abigail Ottinger has alleged that Hunt has assaulted her around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Metropolitan Hotel.

Rice was originally suspended for two games by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who later was heavily criticized for such a light penalty after the video was released. If he goes unclaimed, then Hunt will become a free agent. The Washington Redskins picked up Reuben Foster despite another team cutting him for domestic violence charges. "I'm going to get treatment on it". I made a bad choice. Everything is really happening fast right now and I just want everybody to forgive me and I know it's going to be hard. "I think I deserve it because if you really know me and everybody that I'm really close to - I've had woman really close women that are friends and everybody".
