Former US president George HW Bush dies aged 94

"Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service - to be, in his words, 'a thousand points of light, '" the statement reads.

His son George W. Bush later took over the White House, serving as President for two terms from 2001 to 2009. It was perhaps the high point of Bush's presidency, his approval rating among US voters reaching a record 89 percent, with a fireworks display lighting the night-time sky over Washington to salute the successful mission.

Son George W. Bush likewise described his fellow United States president and father as a "man of the highest character".

He Graduated in 1948 with a degree in economics (Yale University).
