Hyde-Smith is the first woman to represent MS in Congress since a temporary Senate appointment in April. The state leadership is also firmly in GOP hands, with the governor, the state House, and the state Senate all controlled by the GOP.

"I guess you could juxtapose my experience with her experience", Espy said between campaign appearances in Jackson. It says that with "great pride", MS lawmakers "join the Sons of Confederate Veterans" to honor Pharr.

"We are treating the African-American vote nearly as if it were the swing vote", he said.

"My approach is MS first", Espy said at last week's debate.

He said he wasn't anxious about her chances of winning because she has "done a fantastic job in a short period of time" since taking over for Cochran. He has to close the gap in a state where Trump received 58 percent in 2016 and that hasn't elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1982. She was a Democrat before switching parties in 2010, citing her conservative beliefs. CNN reports that as a state senator in 2007, Hyde-Smith co-sponsored a resolution that honored Effie Lucille Nicholson Pharr, whose father was a soldier in Robert E. Lee's army.

Hyde-Smith has made some controversial comments during her campaign, including making a reference to a "public hanging". Several dozen waited in a line that stretched out of the Hinds County Courthouse in downtown Jackson, including retired home economics teacher Illinois Cox Littleton, 92, who said she voted for Espy because she considers him "a highly intelligent man". Her campaign said the remark about voting was a joke. It was later revealed that she had attended a white private school known for deliberately resisting racial integration.

The PAC, Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball PAC, donated $5,000 to Hyde-Smith's campaign on Friday, according to a Saturday FEC filing from the campaign.

Trump defended Hyde-Smith Monday.

Hyde-Smith has established herself as an inveterate supporter of the president.

"She is an outstanding person who is strong on the Border, Crime, Military, our great Vets, Healthcare & the 2nd A. Needed in D.C", he wrote. But more critical attention has been paid toward Confederate monuments, symbols and icons in recent years, particularly after the Charleston, South Carolina, church shooting and white supremacists' march in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Hyde-Smith subsequently gave a partial apology during a November 20 debate against Espy.

While Hyde-Smith apologized during a debate Tuesday night, opponents say she's at least unconsciously echoing the state's history of White supremacy, and civil rights groups have seized the moment to push Black voters to the polls. But she quickly pivoted into attack mode.

"I don't think that her comments really reflect the values of Mississippi".
