The new High Commissioner of India to the UK, Ruchi Ghanashyam has congratulated boxer MC Mary Kom for winning a record sixth gold medal in the Women's World Championships. The 35-year-old Manipuri boxer is a mother of three now.

She evolved from a bullfighter to a smarter pugilist and became world's best amateur boxers of all time. And on October 1, of the same year, the sportswoman won her first Gold Medal at the Asian Games held in South Korea.

"A stellar achievement for #MaryKom, becoming the first woman boxer to win six world championship Gold". After this win, Mary Kom said, "It was not easy to beat Hanna of Ukraine because she is too tall than me".

India on Saturday hailed M C Mary Kom's record sixth gold with congratulatory messages pouring in from President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minster Narendra Modi, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The hosts ended with a gold, a silver and two bronze medals from the 10th edition of the event.

"I am still dreaming about winning the gold in 2020", she quipped.

Kom won a silver in the inaugural women's edition in 2001 and then went on to win gold in each of the next five championships, with her most recent coming in Bridgetown, Barbados in 2010.

With this gold, "Magnificent Mary" also matched Cuban men's legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful pugilist (men and women) in the World Championships history.

Wahner reached the finals after defeating the Dutch ex-professional boxer Jemyma Betrian 5-0 in the semi-finals on Friday.

The second round was the most closely contested one with Mary Kom going for more attack.

In a hard-fought duel between two southpaws, Mary showcased her lovely assortment of right jabs and well-rehearsed combinations to seize initiative.

"First of all, I would like to thank all my fans. The Almighty has blessed her, our community, the country", said Lakhomang. The class and experience was on full display as she outboxed her Ukrainian rival with five judges giving all three rounds to the Indian. "I was competing in the 51 kg (category) for the last 3-4 years because 48 day is not an Olympic category". Some of the her combinations caught Sonia off guard.

"I did my best but it was not enough".
