Donald Trump has said he "very easily" answered written questions from special counsel Robert Mueller, although he speculated that the questions had been "tricked up" to try to catch him in a lie.

He told reporters in the Oval Office Friday that he - and not his lawyers - wrote the answers and that it "didn't take very long to do them".

"The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess", Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday. "As you know, I've been a bit busy".

So the body of evidence available to Mueller's office and other investigators is greater than it was when negotiations began with Trump over responding to questions. I answered the questions very easily.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, he said the investigation had wasted "millions and millions of dollars" and "should never have taken place".

The White House has said it would not answer Mueller's questions on possible obstruction of justice, though that hasn't been confirmed by the special counsel's team, which has generally only detailed its movements in court and through court filings.

And in a case spun off by Mueller, Michael Cohen, who was the billionaire developer's vice president and fixer at the Trump Organization, pleaded guilty in NY to charges related to hush payments made to women who claimed affairs with Trump. You need lawyers to go over some of the answers.

Sources told ABC News the president was irritated with a handful of the questions - a sentiment his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani shared with the Washington Post.

"It led me to believe the walls are closing in and they have been notified by counsel of some actions about to happen", this person said.

He said: "You have to always be careful when you answer with people that probably have bad intentions".

The president's son, Donald Trump Jr, met a Russian lawyer during the campaign who was said to have "dirt" on Mrs Clinton, and former adviser George Papadopoulos has admitted lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about meetings with alleged go-betweens for Russia. The investigators don't care "how many lives they can ruin", he wrote.

Trump has always been dismissive of the Russian Federation investigation and, while this admission means he is cooperating with Mueller, he continued to dismiss the legitimacy of the probe.

Trump, while signing a bill that would restructure portions of the Department of Homeland Security, also seemed to argue that the special counsel was interested in a perjury trap.

The confirmation came nine days after Trump installed a new acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, who has been strongly critical of Mueller and suggested cutting the probe's purse-strings to make it hard to continue.
