Florida produced some of the country's closest results in the USA midterm elections, with a Senate race between outgoing governor Rick Scott and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson also going to a recount.

Florida produced some of the nation's closest results in the November 6 midterm elections, including DeSantis's apparent narrow victory over Gillum. We've been so honored by the support that we've received, ' Gillum said in a video statement. But as more absentee ballots were counted in the following days and the margin between the two men narrowed to within the 0.5 percentage point necessary to trigger a mandatory recount under Florida law, the AP withdrew its projection and Gillum withdrew his concession.

Mr Gillum, who was attempting to become the state's first black governor, had vowed to keep in the race until every single vote was counted.

"R.J. and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida", Gillum said in a Facebook video with his wife at his side.

His wife added: "We are still committed to making our community a better place..." I believe those ballots were probably mixed in with another stack, ' Snipes told the elections Canvassing Board at midday.

That means Gillum gained just 1 vote from the unofficial results that were reported last week, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly charged that Florida's elections were marred by vote fraud, but state and local authorities have said there is no evidence of wrongdoing. But campaigns of ideas must give way to governing and bringing people together to secure Florida's future. More than 8 million voters cast ballots in the race.

Mr Trump had also said there was "a lot of dishonesty" over contested votes. Counties are wrapping up a hand recount this weekend and must submit their official results by noon Sunday.

The drama of counties across the state recounting ballots brought back memories of Florida's 2000 presidential recount. The totals for Nelson and Scott have changed slightly, but not significantly.

Broward County has historically been a Democratic stronghold, but the machine recount on Thursday had Scott leading Nelson by about 12,600 votes for one of the state's U.S. Senate seats. Once that recount was complete, if the differences in any of the races are 0.25 percentage points or less, a hand recount is ordered.
