Women Shatter Many Barriers in Congress, States in US Elections

Texas is sending its first ever Hispanic women to congress, as Veronica Escobar snapped up Beto O'Rouke's old seat and state Sen.

Other elected House members draw pay, but she may have been referring to potential ethics problems of soliciting work after being elected as a member of Congress.

Democrat Ayanna Pressley won her spot in the new Congress after beating out her Democrat primary opponent Mike Capuano, a 10-term congressman, in Massachusetts' 7th District.

But with record numbers of women nominated for the house, the Senate and for Governor, Tuesday was always set to be a historic day for women. With the win, Rojas said, the progressive movement challenging the establishment of the Democratic Party has shown it "can unseat Democrats who are ideologically and demographically out-of-touch with their voters and forced Democratic elected across the country to stiffen their spines". Meanwhile the Arizona senate race is too close to call, but either Republican or Democrat, the victor will be the state's first woman in the seat. Iowa has sent women to the Senate and governor's mansions, but never to the House of Representatives.

Many of them have made history- such as the first two Muslim American women elected to Congress, the first Native American women elected to Congress and the first woman senators for their states.

The first Native American and Muslim congresswomen are heading to the House of Representatives, and MA has its first black congresswoman, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.

As Breitbart News has reported, Democrats have increasingly gained strongholds in congressional districts due to booming foreign-born populations.

On Tuesday night Stevens, a 35-year old who served on Obama's Auto Task Force, won her race to represent Michigan's 11th district. Democrat Janet Mills of ME and Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota are the first women elected as governor in their state.

In the House, 237 women were on the ballot as major-party candidates. They also picked up two more firsts for Congress: Tlaib is the first-ever Palestinian-American and Omar the first Somalian-American to serve in that office.

With results still coming in, 94 women have won or are projected to win their House races as of early Wednesday morning, up from the current 84.

According to Guardian, winners of seats in the House include Latina congresswomen from Texas, the Democrats' Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia, while Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI will be the first Muslim congresswomen.

And several of the female candidates broke records of their own.

For this wave of women leaders, the next few years are going to be about much more than stereotypical women's issues.
