Democrats are furious that the White House and Senate Republicans constricted the investigation into sexual assault charges against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was confirmed.

Despite a seemingly energized grassroots electorate, the Democratic Party has been viewed as a long shot to take back control of the Senate where Republicans now hold a narrow majority of 51 seats to 49 seats for Democrats. It would be the first time the party has controlled the House since 2010. A new generation of Democratic representatives, propelled by resurgent activism, is heading to the halls of Congress.

Democrats will be empowered by the knowledge of again winning far more votes - and will be fired up by defeats as well as victories as they dig in for a reset Washington agenda. At the same time, much of the country's deep-red interior got redder, allowing the GOP to easily dispatch Democratic senators in Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota.

Republicans are projected to hold on to the Senate, gaining at least one seat. Still, while Bill Clinton and the Democrats lost 54 seats to Republicans in 1994, and Barack Obama and the Democrats lost 63 seats to the Republicans in 2010, it doesn't look like Donald Trump and the Republicans will lose almost that many seats to Democrats in these 2018 midterms.

Some of the biggest Democratic stars of the campaign season were struggling, with Beto O'Rourke's underdog US Senate campaign to oust Ted Cruz in conservative Texas failing.

Democrats faced a far more hard challenge in the Senate, where they were nearly exclusively on defense in rural states where Trump remains popular.

Trump waited until late in the night to weigh in on the midterm vote, tweeting a succinct message that overlooked expected Democratic gains in the House, writing: "Tremendous success tonight".

Apart from these four, there are nine other Indian-Americans-six Democrats, two Republicans and one Independent-who are seeking election to the House of Representatives. He was defeated by Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.

For all those reasons the midterm elections turned out the way they did.

MA has its first black congresswoman - Ayanna Pressley winning the state's seventh district. He has brandished the media as the "enemy of the people" and Democrats opposed to his policies as "un-American".

As a result, most congressional analysts believe that the one thing that the Democrats in the House will be able to do without help from either the Senate or the President is "oversight". Trump has framed the elections as a choice between law and order maintained by Republicans and an out-of-control Democratic mob, while focusing heavily on hardline immigration campaign promises, including a legally dubious pledge to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants born in the US. It may have been effective, however, in largely rural states where he remains popular and where the closest Senate races played out. According to FEC data and CRP estimates, $5.2 billion was spent for the 2018 midterms. At least 255 women were on the ballot as major party congressional candidates. Wexton was among the record number of women running this year.
