Other than Manchester United, who have made a hard start, only Spurs have been beaten by a team outside last season's top six while leaders Liverpool have only dropped to City and Chelsea.

"I'm sure Pep is looking at it thinking winning the league this year would be a much bigger achievement than last year".

"When they [players] are fit, you have full focus on what you have to do", he said.

"It wasn't the plan but we need to accept the reality", Pochettino said.

What would get Spurs credit is a strong showing against league champions Man City on Monday, but suffer a third league defeat and more negativity will circle the club.

"They show me how wrong I was", Guardiola said.

Also important to note is how an attacking midfielder drops in to fill the space vacated by the deeper man, giving them a spare man in midfield as well, Eriksen doing this to great effect in the Spurs side - David Silva in City.

But Guardiola rejected the notion that last term's player of the season would not be risked in a game the league leaders go into only two points better off than Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino says the poor quality of the Wembley pitch could hand Tottenham Hotspur an advantage against Manchester City as their meeting on Monday will be just 28 hours after an American football game.

"This season, my feeling is the worst".

"I don't know, many things that happened in summer, many things that make myself not in my best mood or humour".

"Later in my career, Glenn was always so good to me with England, and the reason I signed for Tottenham in 2002 was because I wanted to work with him. What I think is Mr Levy is not an easy guy to negotiate with".

"We have a lot of (other things to focus on) and you know very well when you are competing with sides like we are competing with in the Champions League and Premier League the most important thing is to fight with the same conditions".

The failure to beat the Dutch champions means that, despite seven victories from nine Premier League matches, Pochettino's hopes of emulating last season's run to the last 16 of the Champions League had all but evaporated before the clocks went back.

Announced as the incoming Manchester City manager midway through the 2015/16 season, Guardiola officially took charge in July 2016.

Given the tightness in points at the top of the table, Guardiola also sees this as a game City can ill afford to lose.

"That's why maybe the games against the contenders are becoming so important".

As he acknowledged, a new stadium is no guarantee of success - especially against the spending power of a team such as City.

"Today, we spend a lot of energy in many things". The 28-year-old has missed City's last three games.
