Violent crime is rare in China compared with many other countries, especially in major cities where security is tight, but there has been a series of knife and axe attacks in recent years, many targeting children.

These attacks are often blamed on people with the mental illness or the personal grievances.

A spate of killings of school children in 2010 prompted a response from top government officials and leading many schools to add gates and security guards.

In April this year, nine students were stabbed to death in a similar attack at a middle school in Shaanxi province.
