'Pink Walk' organised to raise breast cancer awareness

Breast cancer survival rates have improved about 1 percent per year over the last 30 years thanks to advances in treatments and chemotherapy/radiation techniques.

BMT has committed to making a $5,000 donation to the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Indian breast cancer patients are younger with an average age of diagnosis of 46.2 years.

Mapfre Group in Malta joined in the Pink October movement by raising awareness among its employees and sponsoring the cost of breast screening for all women who work for the company. According to the Qatar Cancer Registry, the risk of women in the population developing breast cancer is 56 per 100,000.

"Participating in Sunday's event and seeing how many people support the dozens of fighters and survivors who joined in this important initiative is inspiring", said Dr. Heidi Memmel, breast surgeon and Co-Medical Director of the Caldwell Breast Center.

In addition to the contribution, BMT will offer informational brochures at all their banking locations. That's because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"I remember thinking this was unusual, why is he calling me at 9:30 on a Thursday night - and he told me I have cancer", she said. Victoria Sanders hasn't been diagnosed with breast cancer, but she's taking precautions by having a double mastectomy.
