Rome metro station escalator goes haywire, injuring riders

Gurin said: "30 people were injured from among the fans of the CSKA football club in connection with the accident on the escalator of Rome's metro station".

People can be heard screaming in a terrifying video posted on social media that shows bodies being hurled on top of each other as the escalator suddenly goes out of control.

Most of those injured were fans of the visiting Russian football team CSKA Moscow, reports say.

Emergency services described the escalator's steps as "split and crumpled" and surrounded by broken glass and beer bottles, reports Sky Italia.

Reuters reported that some fans became trapped under the escalator's metal plates, and La Repubblica reported that one injury was so serious that it required the amputation of a foot.
